Before You Hit the Field, Hit the Books

By Rachel Gotthelf

While its fun to dream of life as a professional athlete, furthering your education should take precedence, according to DC United soccer player Ben Olson. Students listened intently while Olson spoke during a recent Community Connections event. Community Connections, a collaboration between the YMCA and Einstein High School, promotes social and physical wellness and was designed for students with academic challenges.

Olson inspired the young students to stay focused on their educations. Regardless of their athletic aspirations, he said, students must remember to put education first.

Boys and girls crowded around Olson after he finished speaking. Dozens of hands held out glossy pictures for an autograph, and students eagerly posed for pictures with the professional athlete.

Olson said he was excited when his wife, a health and physical education teacher at the school, and the YMCA asked him to participate in the program.  "The one thing I know about the Y is the outreach programs they have are second to none, and they continue to do that in every community, so I figured getting involved in just a small aspect is great," Olson said.

Olson said he enjoys encouraging local children, especially those who need a little boost.  "Thank you to the Y," he said.  "They do such a great job with the youth, helping them develop."
