Learn more About Y Anthony Bowen

Join us on Monday, Feb. 15 for our Branch Open House! Guests will learn more about this historic branch, tour the facilities, have access to our indoor pool, sample group exercise classes and feast on some nibbles from our culinary studio! Bring a friend and see what the Y has to offer!

Join us for AcroYoga

A combination of yoga and acrobatics, AcroYoga will test your balance and concentration, but still have the gentle healing you've come to love with yoga.

Whether your'e looking for something fun to do with your sweetheart, or seek a new way to test yourself, join us for an AcroYoga demonstration on Saturday, Feb. 13! After the class, enjoy chocolate-covered strawberries and sparkling cider.

The event is free, but space is limited. Don't forget to register

Carriage House Now Open!

The two-level state-of-the-art Carriage House studios are located adjacent to YMCA Anthony Bowen and will be the home for our Mind and Body programming including Yoga, Pilates, Pilates Reformer, Pilates Chair, Meditation and Barre! The new studios and expanded group exercise classes will start January 4, 2016.

Y Tri? Y Not!

If you've been thinking about your next fitness challenge, you should join the YMCA's Triathlon Team! Now entering its 16th training season, YTri is a great program for aspiring triathletes as well as seasoned veterans. Join the only triathlon team in DC with a training facility for all three disciplines, USA Triathlon-certified coaches and 3 coached sessions per week. Krav Maga

Taught by DC’s leading Krav Maga black belt, Chris Torres, in this class you will learn Self Defense techniques so you can defend yourself and your family, eliminate fear, and turn heads with your new toned body. Krav Maga draws techniques from a variety of combat sports, including boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling, and jiu-jitsu. $79/month for unlimited classes. 

New Group Exercise Classes Coming to the Schedule!

  • Tae Kwon Do - Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art with a heavy emphasis on kicks. Students will develop discipline and confidence as well as incredible levels of fitness through self-defense. 
  • Capoeira - A Brazilian martial art known for its quick and complex, yet graceful moves, Capoeira blends power, speed, and leverage to improve participants’ mobility and coordination. This is a great class if you are looking to improve your stamina, gain confidence, and learn about a new culture. 
  • Pilates Chair - Pilates Chair classes creates a unique and challenging way to build strength in the core, improve balance and increase muscle coordination and control.

Plans for Expansion

Plans are underway to expand the branch and modify the layout where needed in order to build capacity and satisfaction for the growing membership! On January 4th, we opened the Carriage House (located just behind the facility) which features two new Group Exercise studios, as well as increased the availability of the most popular group exercise classes (as requested in member surveys and through class attendance counts). In addition, we are currently working on expanding the free weight room with more space and more equipment. We hope you like the changes that are coming your way!

We're going green! Our new MINDBODY system makes it easier for you to view our monthly group exercise schedule, and to register for your favorite classes! All you need to do is to create an account to get started!

School's Out? Come to the Y!

When school is closed for holidays, spring break, administrative days, etc., the Y offers fun and enriching programs that support your child’s continued growth and exploration. YMCA Anthony Bowen's School Days Out camps include swimming, rock climbing, arts and crafts, sports, performing arts, homework assistance and tutoring, nutrition and more! Your child will enjoy also physical activity, problem-solving games and making new friends. Camps run from 9am to 6:30pm. Due to limited space, our School Days Out camps are currently full. Whether you're looking for a unique date night, girl's night out, a better understanding of nutrition or more freedom and confidence in the kitchen, our cooking classes are just the answer. We are thrilled to offer beginner, seasonal and guest-hosted Cooking Classes in our culinary studio!

Announcing New Aquatics Programs

Stroke Development
January 6, 2016 to February 28, 2016
Saturdays 11:15am-12pm
Ages 6 to 15 years old

A class designed for children who have completed all levels of swim lessons and/or would like the workout of a swim team without the competitive elements. Children should be able to perform all four strokes well. Children will learn advanced techniques, as well as starts and turns. Click here to register!

January 4, 2016 to February 29, 2016
Sundays 10:30am-11:15am
Ages 6 to 12 years old

A class for highly advanced young swimmers. Children must be able to swim eight lengths of the pool nonstop. They should be able to swim two lengths each of a proper front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, and butterfly. Children in this class can also perform flip turns and racing dives. Are you looking for an inspired space to host your upcoming party or meeting? YMCA Anthony Bowen’s conference room and terrace is available to rent! It’s ideal for birthday parties, holiday parties, receptions, trainings and other meeting needs. It hosts 80 people seated and 120 people reception-style. Rates are:

Morning Half Day (8am to Noon/4 hours)

Terrace Only - $400
Room & Terrace - $900

Full Day (8am to 5pm/8 hours)

The unique design celebrates the legacy of YMCA Anthony Bowen as historically the first African American Y, founded in 1853, along with its ability to adapt and serve our community’s evolving needs. It also pays tribute to its famed visitors (such as Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, Poet Langston Hughes and Dr. Charles Drew) and founder Anthony Bowen, a slave who purchased his freedom in 1830 and went on to become a prominent religious and community leader.
