Turkey Chase - A 19-year old Family Tradition
The Graves family ranges from 3 years to 61 – and each one of them come to YMCA Bethesda-Chevy Chase every Thanksgiving morning. The 61 year old, Stella Graves has made the Turkey Chase her family's Thanksgiving tradition since 1984.
Stella's husband, John Graves, was a track athlete in school and tackled his first Turkey Chase race in the '80s. He was shortly joined by his children who followed in his footsteps of athleticism. After Stella ran her first race at the age of 40, extended family got involved and it grew into something magical.
Every year the Graves team gets together to do the one must-do for Thanksgiving. “This is the kickoff we await to start our Thanksgiving,” said Stella in enthusiasm. Kyle, one of the youngest, even won the 2-mile race a couple years ago!
“We used to cheer each other on because some of us would be walking it while the others finished and watch on the sideline,” said Stella. “But now, we are all running it!” This year, new additions to the Graves Family will be joining in on the turkey fun - Stella's grandkids ages 3 and 5 years old.
Nothing would keep this family away from celebrating their Thanksgiving with the Turkey Chase – not the cold weather, not the brisk wind…nothing! “I stepped outside this morning, so Thursday can’t be as bad as it is right now,” Stella said. “We’ll be there!”
