Welcome to YMCA Anthony Bowen!
More than 150 years ago, Anthony Bowen created a legacy that continues to positively impact the lives of children and families in the District of Columbia. A former slave, Anthony Bowen broke new ground when he founded the nation’s first African-American YMCA. Now we are breaking new ground once again, as we rebuild YMCA Anthony Bowen to better serve the growing Shaw/Cardozo neighborhood.
When YMCA Anthony Bowen first opened its doors in this neighborhood, the community was plagued with gang fighting and ruled by drug lords. The Y quickly became a vital anchor in the neighborhood, providing a safe and nurturing place for individuals and families.
Now, the revitalized YMCA Anthony Bowen will offer countless modern amenities such as a rooftop terrace for neighborhood gatherings; a six lane pool that will allow us to continue our tradition of teaching D.C. to swim; and space for our life-changing wellness programs. The cornerstone of the YMCA, however, will continue to be our commitment to the community.
YMCA Anthony Bowen has never been defined by its building but by its programs, services and impact in the community. During the construction period, YMCA Anthony Bowen will still be a vital part of the community, providing child care at nearby Mt. Airy Baptist Church. YMCA National Capital will also open its doors to all of our valued members.
We will continue to update you about upcoming events to celebrate the “New Y for the New U.” Please join us as we honor this important time in YMCA Anthony Bowen’s long and prestigious history
Warm Regards,
