Youth Enrichment
YMCA Big Friends Mentoring
The Big Friends Program is a volunteer program developed for boys and girls who can benefit from the guidance and companionship of trusted adults. It pairs a man and boy or a woman and girl (one to one) to foster a positive, healthy, productive and rewarding relationship.
Big friends are mature, responsible men and women over 18 years of age. They are adults who understand and appreciate the art of friendship and have a sincere interest in youth. They spend 2+ hours per week with Little Friends, participating in planned outings like bowling, pool parties, fishing trips, and airplane rides.
Little Friends are children residing in Loudoun County, between the ages of 7 and 15 from a single parent household, are referred by a parent/teacher/agency, and have parental consent.
Volunteers are always needed, not only for matching with children, but also to assist the operation of the program.
Positive role models and encouragement build the self-esteem of our young people, motivating them to reach their highest potential as individuals and members of the community. The philosophy is simple, the implications are profound: if you set kids on the right path when they are young, you won't have to devote resources later to remedy problems that could have been prevented.
