FIT AND WELL SENIORS – DC-BASED PROGRAM

Do you worry about mom or grandpa sitting at home with little physical activity and no one to take care of them as they grow more frail every day? So are we.

 

That's why the Y's Fit & Well Seniors caters to the needs of more than 100,000 seniors residing in DC, many of whom are widowed, living on a modest income and have limited access to activities. Launched in 2010 in partnership with CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, this program helps seniors find energy, movement and a support network. 

We offer 119 land and 26 aquatics classes in all 8 Wards of DC in addition to health and lifestyle assessments, inter-generational activities, social clubs and a mobile unit – all free of charge. Over 5,000 seniors participate in this program each year.

SASSY (Senior Active Spirits Staying Young)

An energizing, fun program for seniors, ages 55 and older, that includes a variety of low-impact exercises to stimulating music, chair exercises, use of dumbbells, stretch bands, supervised weight/strength training machine, and the track for walking. This program helps maintain or improve your lifestyle, ease tension, and reduce stress.

Senior Fun & Fitness

This class is designed for older adults who want to increase strength, flexibility, balance and endurance using light weights, a resistance band, balls and chairs. Silver Sneakers and YMCA members welcome!

Small Group Training

This program is designed to provide the support, the tools and encouragement that is necessary to achieve your weight loss goals through a friendly and non-competitive atmosphere.  Groups consist of 3-5 participants assigned as a TEAM.  Each Team is assigned to a personal trainer and over the course of six weeks you will be coached and educated on healthy lifestyle modifications that will help you reach your weight loss goals.

BodyJam

BODYJAM™ is the cardio workout where you are free to enjoy the sensation of dance. Funky instructors teach you to move with attitude through this 55 minute class. So grab a friend, get front and center, and get high on the feeling of dance.

Boot Camp

The class will utilize different types of training, from body weight & boxing-style exercises to boot camp & athletic-style exercises, in order to improve your body’s function as one unit. It is intense and effective for all who put in 100%. If you are ready to take yourself mentally and physically to the next level, all you have to do is show up. Give your all, and gain your all.

Dance & Step Aerobics

Dance and Step Aerobics are moderate intensity cardiovascular workouts. Some classes are dance-based, borrowing steps and music from popular styles such as Latin, disco, hip-hop, jazz, Caribbean, and more. Step classes use an adjustable height platform in the choreography. You don’t have to be well coordinated to do any of the dance steps. The emphasis is on having fun while getting fit.

A fun and easy-to-follow choreographed aerobic dance class, followed by a muscle-toning segment.

Hi-Lo Aerobics

This is a great workout, including muscle toning and flexibility. Hi-lo includes both high and low impact conditioning.

A strong cardiovascular workout minimizing lower body impact followed by a short muscle-toning segment. Bar, bells, benches: This class includes a morning boot camp style routine using a mix of equipment. Segments of cardio will keep members up and moving with the beat of the music.
