When school is out, it can be hard for parents to ensure their children are safe and stimulated. Children are often idle, which can increase their risk of obesity, or engage in risky behavior due to lack of supervision. In addition, a lack of summer learning opportunities is a major cause of the achievement gap between low- and high-income families. YMCA summer camps help bridge these gaps.
Nearly 130,000 DC-area children lived below the poverty line in 2016, but less than 5,000 kids received scholarships to attend overnight and day Y camps. 23% of all the kids that attended Summer Y camp received financial assistance. Summer Y camp provides healthy and engaging activities among caring and inspiring role models.
WTOP and Perfect Sense have partnered with the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington for the past few years by supporting our ongoing commitment to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility that address – child welfare, water safety, education, job training counseling, and more. Because of partners like WTOP and Perfect Sense, the Y is able send deserving kids to camp. Please make your gift today.
