Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program (AFAP)

Empowering Movement Through Water

The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington proudly offers the Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program (AFAP), designed to help individuals with arthritis and related conditions improve their quality of life through water-based exercise.

AFAP is a structured water exercise program developed by the Arthritis Foundation and Y-USA. Led by certified instructors, the classes focus on:

  • Joint range of motion
  • Stretching and flexibility
  • Breathing techniques
  • Light aerobic activities

These gentle exercises are conducted in a warm-water pool, providing a safe and comfortable environment that reduces joint stress while promoting physical activity.

Why choose Aqua Arthritis Classes?

Arthritis affects 1 in 4 adults in the U.S., leading to pain, stiffness, and decreased mobility. Regular participation in AFAP classes can:

  • Reduce arthritis-related pain
  • Improve joint flexibility and muscle strength
  • Enhance balance and coordination
  • Boost overall mood and quality of life

Engaging in water-based exercise is also beneficial for managing other chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.
