Save Snap-Ed

Federal cuts have eliminated SNAP-Ed funding in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia — threatening to end free nutrition education for tens of thousands of families who rely on the YMCA’s trusted programs for healthier lives.

For the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, this means an immediate loss of $150,000 annually in DC alone — disrupting programs that have, for nearly a decade, helped families eat better, live healthier, and prevent chronic disease.

These funds support free cooking classes, nutrition workshops, and Veggie Butchers – all of which help residents make healthier choices on a limited budget.

Without replacement funding, programs will end and the health equity gap will deepen.

The YMCA Is Stepping Up

Through the SAVE SNAP-ED campaign, the YMCA is mobilizing a $600,000 emergency fund to restore and expand nutrition education programs across the region — reaching 14,000 residents in DC, with plans to extend to Maryland and Virginia.

These funds will:

  • Keep educators and health coaches in the field
  • Expand bilingual nutrition programs across three states
  • Sustain partnerships with clinics, schools, and WIC sites
  • Prevent interruptions in programs that help families cook, learn, and live better
